ISICO: our research on the roof of the world |
|
|
|
ISICO specialists, starting with Prof. Stefano Negrini, scientific director, and Michele Romano, physiotherapy director, are at the top of the world’s research rankings with research on SEAS - Scientific Exercise Approach to Scoliosis, and the revolutionary Sforzesco brace, which has proven its efficacy in replacing plaster casts in the treatment of scoliosis. The data from three studies says so and are the first to map the scientific knowledge of research on scoliosis conservative treatment using visual research techniques, aiming to give an in-depth overview of the research status and developments in this subject... |

In each number of our newsletter, we present the experiences on how scoliosis is treated worldwide through an interview with one of our Online Master course participants. They are fellow doctors, physiotherapists, and orthopaedic technicians from all over the world.
This month's interview is with Low Geik Kiang, a a physiotherapist from Malaysia.
"In Malaysia orthopaedic doctors normally will advise patients to go for physiotherapy treatment if surgical intervention is not indicated. However, there are many other options, like traditional massage, traditional medicine... ". |

Training day 2024: full speed ahead! Throughout the years, the annual meeting of all the people who work at Isico has become a regular event, and a few days ago we joined together for a time of discussion and growth.
The Isico staff, including physicians, physiotherapists, movement scientists, psychologists, secretaries, administrators, and communicators, gathered in Milan from all over Italy.
The two days of training and team building numbered almost a hundred of us, which shows how rapidly our institute has expanded in recent years.
Getting everyone together again was an important moment, and, for the second year, the precious presence of an external consultant helped us to consider, from multiple points of view, the problems and interactions affecting the group.
We also had the great pleasure of having among us Dr. Xiaohua He, professor at the Palmer College of Chiropractic in USA, and one of his collaborators, who organise the SEAS courses in China. In the photo on the right below, they are together with Prof. Stefano Negrini, scientific director of Isico; Eng. Alberto Negrini, CEO of Isico; and Michele Romano, physiotherapy director of Isico.

| Prepare: website and newsletter
Prepare, the four-year European project in which we are involved with 18 other centres (Isico deals with adolescent scoliosis), also goes forward from the communication point of view.
After the launch of the site and social pages on X and LinkedIn, the first number of the biannual newsletter was released in December, to which you can subscribe through this link not to miss updates.
Isico also contributed with an article on predictive Models in Non-Surgical Scoliosis Treatment during Growth.
Below are the first lines of the article "Embracing Predictive Models in Non-Surgical Scoliosis Treatment during growth: A Game-Changer for Patient Care" which continues on the Prepare website.
"Scoliosis is defined in 80–85% of cases as “idiopathic”, which is another way of saying that we currently don’t know the cause. Over 80% of these cases are diagnosed during adolescence, affecting about 2-3% of the population, with seven in ten cases being female.
This condition... poses a significant challenge in determining the most appropriate treatment options. However, recent advances in predictive modelling may significantly improve how we approach non-surgical scoliosis care...". |

| SEAS once again will land in Turkey
The SEAS courses continue during March with a series of new appointments. Michele Romano, the director of physiotherapy at Isico, will return to Turkey with a SEAS Level 1 course. In this country, we have been guests for several years with our training programmes.
For the first time, we will instead be holding a SEAS course in Kyiv, Ukraine, on March 15–17. The course will be taught virtually from Italy by Michele Romano, with on-site assistance from a physiotherapist at the rehabilitation facility that is housing the event.
We would like to remind you that the SEAS Accreditation Programme is a path that leads participants to a more in-depth understanding of the SEAS approach and certification, guaranteeing up-to-date information.

Can adult scoliosis get worse?
Scoliosis in adulthood can get worse, but it depends on various factors.
One factor is the degree of scoliosis; the more severe the scoliosis, the more it tends to deteriorate. Scientific studies in this regard highlight a trend towards deterioration for those at the end of growth having scoliosis from 30 degrees Cobb and above, while at the exceeding threshold of 45/50 degrees of scoliosis, it is almost sure that with the passing of the years, the scoliosis will worsen. Another critical factor is lifestyle. Having an active life and participating in sporting activities helps maintain good muscle tone so as to provide support to the spine and counteract the tendency of the curves to collapse.
Braces in adulthood do not improve scoliosis; with no more bone growth, it is impossible to condition the vertebral shape.
The brace can only be indicated for an aesthetic issue in very early adulthood when it is particularly compromised. The other indication of the brace in adults is pain; in this case, it is advisable to assess with a specialist physician. |

I have several hernias
that are giving me back pain In most cases, the hernias won’t be the cause of the pain. An MRI scan showing the presence of hernias in the spine should be correlated to the clinical examination and the patient’s symptoms.
Structural changes, such as protrusions or disc degeneration, are very unlikely to give rise to chronic pain. They are like white hair: a physiological and normal part of the ageing process, and as a rule they are not particularly painful. In some studies, MRIs performed on healthy and asymptomatic subjects highlighted alterations such as hernias or spondylolisthesis.
It is therefore important for the doctor to explain the findings and examine the patient, so as to establish whether what can be seen on the scan could actually be a cause of their symptom. |
