Postural kyphosis is a poor postural habit in which a patient's back appears abnormally rounded. This study, including patients with postural kyphosis and patients with with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and Scheuermann kyphosis, aimed to compare their health-related quality of life. The results showed patients with postural kyphosis have reduced health-related quality of life, similarly to patients with common structural spine deformities. ISICO - "Italian Scientific Institute for the Spine" promotes and develops an innovative approach in the rehabilitation treatment of non-surgical diseases of the spine, from the child to the elderly. A common feature is the attention to the person: we take a special care of the psychological impact of the disease, without disregarding obviously the medical needs, but by enhancing the effectiveness of treatments through personalization, motivation and by sharing the goals and the individualized treatment programs . Clinical practise Each year more than 6700 patiens coming from all over Italy but also from several foreign countries look for consultation in one of our clinics: the headquarter in Milan is supported by other 27 clinics in Italy, where all diseases of the spine of nonsurgical interest are treated conservatively. scoliosis kyphosis neck pain osteoporosis Research & Education ISICO works closely with Italian and foreign research institutes and universities, is an active member of SOSORT (International Scientific Society for research on scoliosis and its non-surgical treatment) and translates its research efforts in a careful and continuous disclosure on one side through publications in journals of scientific literature at national and international level, but also through the organization of the National Congress "Spine & Rehabilitation". In addition ISICO organizes the annual Master's degree focused on the treatment of spinal pathologies, further to international courses which focus on the SEAS protocol aimed at professionals from all over the world. Thanks to the high number of scientific publications (over 180 publications of international importance, PubMed indexed) ISICO can be considered as a benchmark for authority and specialization, first in Italy for number of publications in the field of non-surgical treatment of scoliosis. Although knowledge is still needed regarding mechanisms acting between physical activity and chronic pain, further evidence in favor of physical activity in the containment of chronic pain. People who are physically active in their free time are less likely to suffer from various types of chronic pain after 7-8 years compared to those who have a sedentary lifestyle: this is what emerges from the study conducted by a Norwegian team, which recruited around 7,000 adults through the Tromsø survey, collecting data on participants' health and lifestyle over decades. It's a huge honour to be one of the partners of this amazing PREPARE Rehab team as well as a great challenge. Four years of cooperation and research spreading will unify this group more and more. Let's go ahead!
ISICO and the international SOSORT congress In addition to being Isico in the guise of Prof. Stefano Negrini, one of the founders in 2004 of this non-profit organisation, ISICO has been present in all congress editions with numerous abstracts, winning the SOSORT Award many times. In this edition of 2024 that takes place in Boston, USA, our specialists will be at the conference with all eight abstracts submitted and accepted; Stefano Negrini , Fabio Zaina , Alessandra Negrini, Michele Romano, and Carlotte Kiekens ✔️Normative data for radiographic sagittal parameters in asymptomatic population from childhood to adulthood: a systematic search and review (oral presentation) ✔️Lessons learned on trunk neurophysiology and motor control from adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. A scoping review (poster) ✔️Influence of specific interventions on bracing compliance in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis. A systematic review of the literature including sensors’ monitoring (oral presentation) ✔️Can currently used questionnaires like ODI (and SRS-22) discriminate patients with scoliosis in a population with chronic back pain? (oral presentation) ✔️Personal and clinical determinants of brace wearing time in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (oral presentation) ✔️Convexity orientation of single scoliotic curves. Are they as we have always been taught? Verification of 4470 single curves (oral presentation) ✔️Suspected high prevalence and gender difference of scoliotic curves with the apex at T12 (oral presentation) ✔️PREPARE: Personalised rehabilitation via novel AI patient stratification strategies – the case for idiopathic scoliosis during growth (poster). #scoliosis #sosortgroup #spine #spinehealth #education PREPARE Rehab #rehabilitation #scoliosisbrace #teamwork

Debunking recurring myths: I've had back pain for years and there must be something that triggered it, like an injury. Not true! In the absence of a significant spinal trauma of the kind caused by being thrown from a moving vehicle, the human spine is capable of absorbing considerable amounts of energy without being damaged. Also, it should be considered that while trauma might trigger acute pain, which should be investigated, in the case of pain that has been there for years, in the absence of a real trigger, multiple contributing factors might be considered, as well as aggravating factors to be targeted through physiotherapy. #myths #back #backpain #lowbackpain #injury #spine #spinehealth #health #healthcare #physiotherapy #trauma #pain #Isico

Scoliosis and lower limb inequality: to lift or not to lift, that is the question! 💀🤔 Asymmetrical lengths of the lower limbs, a condition commonly referred to as leg length inequality (LLI) or discrepancy (LLD), is frequently observed in subjects with scoliotic alterations of the spine. This asymmetry can induce pelvic misalignments, manifested by an asymmetric height of the iliac crests, and consequently an alteration of the spine's axis. Although correcting this discrepancy might appear to be a straightforward solution, further investigation may reveal other indications. As the findings of this study indicate, scoliotic discrepancies should be compensated only when the imbalance of the femoral heads is on the same side as the imbalance of the sacrum and the iliac crests; this corrective action should result in a reduction of the overhang in the coronal plane. Due to the growing interest in artificial intelligence (AI) for diagnostic purposes, this study aimed to evaluate the capabilities of AI models, including ChatGPT and Microsoft Bing, in the diagnosis of single-curve scoliosis based on posturographic radiological images. Overall, although ChatGPT demonstrated potential in detecting scoliosis, its abilities in assessing Cobb angles and other parameters were limited and inconsistent with expert assessments. The results partially confirmed the hypothesis that AI models can recognize scoliosis in radiological images, underscoring the need for comprehensive improvement of AI algorithms, including broader training with diverse X-ray images and advanced image processing techniques, before they can be considered as auxiliary in diagnosing scoliosis by specialists. At the Sosort Congress 2024 in Boston, one of the 8 abstracts submitted by ISICO and presented by @Carlotte Kiekens, is linked to the European project PREPARE Rehabin which ISICO is one of the partners. The poster presentation is titled "Personalised rehabilitation via novel AI patient stratification strategies – the case for idiopathic scoliosis during growth". PREPARE Rehabaims to provide healthcare professionals with valuable insights and tools to better predict and stratify patients, ultimately leading to more personalised and effective rehabilitation interventions. Artificial Intelligence (AI) may help predict treatment outcomes and improve rehabilitation strategies for idiopathic scoliosis. #AI #scoliosis #idiopathicscoliosis #rehabilitation #sosortgroup #artificialintelligence #future #healthcare #sosort
